In a surprise ceremony at Christ Church Cathedral on his last day of active ministry as Acting Bishop in Southern Ohio, the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price, Jr. was named an Honorary Canon of the cathedral by Interim Dean the Rev. Canon Jason Leo.

Citing Bishop Price’s long and caring ministry in the diocese and to the cathedral congregation, Canon Leo explained with his usual humor that he “wasn’t really sure if we are allowed to do this,” but along with Honorary Canon the Rev. George Hill and Sub Dean the Rev. Paul Williams, offered a resolution honoring Bishop Price and with the joyous agreement of the wardens and congregation installed him as the newest Honorary Canon.

The text of the resolution honoring the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price is included below. You can also watch a video of the ceremony on the cathedral’s livestream page.

A Resolution Honoring the Right Reverend Kenneth L. Price, Jr.

Whereas, the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price Jr. will end his active ministry as Bishop in Southern Ohio and return to full-time retirement on July 31, 2021; and

Whereas, Christ Church Cathedral commends and offers thanks for his twenty-seven years of encouraging and caring ministry among us, namely, by serving eighteen years as the first Bishop Suffragan of the diocese, where he helped to lead the visioning and building of the conference facilities at the Procter Center, introduced Family Camp in the diocese, commissioned scores of camp counselors, provided loving pastoral care to the clergy and families, and was a champion of small churches, particularly in the East region of the diocese; and

Whereas, as a faithful servant and recognized leader of the greater Church, he took on the role of host Bishop to the 2006 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Columbus, was appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the international Windsor Report Reception Committee, held the office of Secretary of the House of Bishops for several years, and was elected and served for three years as Bishop Provisional in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, helping a broken diocese to heal and rebuild; and

Whereas, during a global pandemic and time of isolation, he cheerfully and regularly made the trek from Columbus to Cincinnati to preach to both an online congregation at an empty Cathedral or socially-distanced, masked gatherings; he embraced the use of technology to bring together both clergy and laity for monthly check-ins and discussion on Zoom, and pre-recorded several sermons for the Cathedral and other churches in the diocese, giving clergy a much-needed break and their congregants a much-needed message of reassurance; and

Whereas, with indefatigable energy and with his loving and faithful wife Mariann seemingly never more than five feet from his side, he led this diocese as Ecclesiastical Authority from 2006 to 2007 and as acting Bishop for these last eight months, twice preparing the diocesan staff for a bishop transition and providing a steady hand during difficult times; therefore, be it

Resolved, that on this day, Sunday, July 25, 2021, witnessed by this congregation present, the Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price, Jr. be named an Honorary Canon of Christ Church Cathedral as an expression of our profound gratitude for his excellent leadership and loving care of us all.
