Preparing for Lame Duck and new state budget

Do you yearn for public policy consistent with the Baptismal vows we just renewed on All Saints Day – to support justice and peace and the dignity of all people?  Email me your contact information if you’d like to join a network of advocates of faith across our diocese.

The Ohio Legislature’s Lame Duck session is likely to move a lot of legislation. The Governor and new Legislature will start early in the new year on the next biennial budget, with major implications for public education and safety net programs. Two upcoming sessions will provide valuable insights:

Nov. 29 Advocacy in Advent: Sponsored by the Ohio Council of Churches and Hunger Network in Ohio, this day begins with prayer and issue briefings at Trinity, Capitol Square, and continues with meetings with Ohio legislators.  The issues include food security (especially for children); bail and criminal justice reform so nonviolent offenders can work and support their families, and repeal of the death penalty. Register here.  Registration includes boxed lunch with options including no pork, vegetarian, and vegan.

Dec. 6, 2022 Budget Training Academy Summit, noon-4:15, Sheraton Hotel, Capitol Square  Advocates for Ohio’s Future and The Center for Community Solutions present this in-person training featuring expert panels of administration officials, state legislative officials, nonprofit advocates, and more, for in-depth discussions on the upcoming 2024-2025 State Operating Budget. The $30 cost includes lunch. Register here. You can apply for a scholarship at this link. All summit attendees are also invited to join Stronger Together, our 2022 Ohio Health & Human Services Legislative Reception at the Ohio Statehouse from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. State legislators, members of the administration, and HHS advocates and experts will be in attendance at the reception. Reception attendance, which is free with your summit registration, is optional. Questions?  Reach out to Sarah Hudacek at the Center for Community Solutions.
